Hello Margaret
I am Sheena Taylor - my son is an Archaeology student at Aberdeen University who is currently writing a dissertation on John Rae the antiquarian and his collection. Having read your fascinating obituary on the Clan Macrae website, would you mind if we ask you about your great-grandfather - for instance, about the photo attached to the piece? My son is in the process of conducting research at museums in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Oxford which all hold items from the original collection and would be very grateful for your personal input.
I hope you don't mind me contacting you like this but it was wonderful to find a direct link to such an interesting man.
Best regards, Sheena Taylor

Hi, Sheena,
Wow, how marvellous.
unfortunately We , My younger sister & i do not know very much at all about John our great grandfather , as my grandfather was only 2 when he died , with our own father being the youngest of 10 himself , & also past over . although he did used to say that his aunt Mary used to have some of the items in her home! .
The obituary & Photo, were from a book which my father used to have , which now my sister has , I am waiting for my sister to get back to me with the name of the book .I am sorry I have not been much help , But if you wouldn't mind I would love to have a read of the dissertation on John Rae .

Hello Margaret
Thanks for getting back to me - as regards the book you mention, we would be delighted to know the title as we only have newspaper articles from John's time recording his activities.
On a different theme, we wondered if you have any idea where John is buried as his stone would be of great interest? I was at the City Archive last week and found John's father, Thomas's interment details - both he and his wife are buried in Nellfield Cemetery (Grave reference 1750)but have had no luck with John or his wife Jane.
Thanks once again for your help - it is greatly appreciated, and you are more than welcome to read the dissertation when it is finished which will be in December.
Best wishes
Sheena Taylor

Hello Margaret
Thanks very much for your reply re the book of obituaries - my son will be able to use the information you gave to try to track it down.
Regarding Nellfield Cemetery, he found both John Rae and Thomas Rae's lairs on a visit there last week.
Thanks again for all your efforts to help.
Best wishes,
Sheena

Hello Margaret
Yes he has finished the dissertation and I would be glad to post you a copy if you can give me an address to send it to? I don't know if you would prefer me to send it c/o a work address, etc rather than putting your home address on the forum?
Let me know what you think and I'll get it organised.
Best wishes
Sheena
