This could be mission impossible. My grandfather was Thomas McCrae, born about 1862. I understood from my father, William Llewelyn McCrae that Thomas ran away to sea at the age of fourteen from his home in Dumfriess (unwilling to face his father after a violent altercation with his schoolmaster). My next trace of Thomas is his marriage in London when he mentioned on his marriage certificate that his father's occupation was that of blacksmith. I then found him on the 1901 census where he he gave his birthplace as Ireland. Does anyone know of a blacksmith named McCrae who had a son run away to sea around 1875/76?
