hoping some one can help...

My name is Gary Murchison & I have traced my direct line back to a Kenneth Murchison born 1799/1800 in Lochcarron and died in 1868 in Edinburgh. His father was also Kenneth Murchison married to Christina (Christy) MacRae. There is mention of a Kenneth Murchison marrying Christina around this time in both the dornie manuscript & "notes on the Murchisons"... and I'm therefore hoping to 'plug' my line into these docs. However to verify this I need to know if Christina's father was Duncan MacRae. I cannot find a death or birth record for Christina and I am hoping that someone else has researched this Christina and shed some light onto who her father was.

I don't have precise dates, but can get them. My paternal Grandfather was Alexander Murchison. He lived in Edinburgh and died around 1969. I know that they were the only Murchisons listed in the Edinburgh telephone directory - so there can't be many of us. Let me know if this is any use and I will post more info to you, when I've looked at all the old certificates at my mums house

Gary,

I have researched the MURCHISON line for sometime. I have several related MacRae but not the ones you mentioned. My Murchison line came from Lochcarron to the U.S. Through Canada. They went to Illinois and then on to Oregon. Do you have anything that would fit in?

Thanks,

Jay

Hello,I'm pretty sure that there must be some connection between your McRaes and Murchisons and mine. Mine too came from Lochcarron and emigrated to the States in the early 1850's. I believe at least some of them went to Canada first but they didn't stay there long. Then at least some were in Illinois and Iowa. Set off for the wild west with 'The Scotch Train' and eventually settled in Washington Territory and Oregon. Janet McRae, son of Alex McR & Jane Bain m Alexander Cameron, her brother Duncan married his neice Christina McLennan and Christina's sister Margaret married Kenneth Murchison, s of Finlay M & Kate Maclean. All of these familes were originally from Lochcarron. If anything seems familiar to anyone, I'd be happy to pass on the info I have.

Hello Gary,

I understand your frustration. I have been researching my branch of the Murchison family for a few years now, and have come across the brick wall when parish records suddenly tail off. The Murchisons and MacRaes are mixed by marriage quite regularly, and both 'family names' are common in the Lochalsh & Lochcarron parishes of Wester Ross, so it is a long shot that your Christina is the daughter of Duncan, mentioned in the online extract of the Dornie manuscript. The Lochalsh and Lochcarron parish records covering both birth/christening and marriages are as far back as the early 19th century, earlier records are very patchy. It's likely your Christina (Chirsty) MacRae was born long before the recordkeeping was reliable. However, have you tried the Scottish Record office site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk? They have the Scottish parish and census records online, which can be searched for a fee.

Good luck, and I hope you find your thread again. I am a descendent of one of the Kenneth Murchisons living in Lochcarron at the time of your Kenneth Murchison ancestor (Kenneth of Craig), my ancestor John (son of Kenneth) was born in 1790 in Craig Lochcarron.

My name is Alexander Murchison, although not the same one you are mentioning. I know very little of my family tree, the only Scottish tie I know is my grandfather. David Murchison, born in Edinburgh, married to Joan Lodge, currently residing in Cumbria.

google Dr. Alexander Macrae's 'History of the Clan MacRae with Genealogies'. Lots of Murchisons married MacRaes and the descendants of the Duncan MacRaes are well documented.
LOOK at Ian ( john) Carrach MacRae son of maurice of Clunes and his descendants.
This might help
