I'm trying to find ancestors of George McRae who, according to various English census records, was born about 1817 in Aberdeenshire.
He married an Elizabeth Hudgell in 1840 in Southwark and they lived in various parts of south London until his death in 1885.
He appears to have moved to London to work in a leather mill which was leased by a William McRae. Many members of this branch of the McRae family appear to have worked in the mill with their occupations given as leather dresser, skinner or tanner.
The 1851 census shows George living in Bermondsey with his family plus a sister Ann Murray (aged 56, born Scotland) and a brother Andrew McRae (aged 45, born Scotland)
George's marriage certificate gives his father's name as John McRae and no mother's name.
Is anyone able to help me identify which John McRae that would be?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Helen
Just got to the very end of enquiries on this site and came across your query. I don't think I can help with John, but I would love to know what information you have. You seem to have more info than I do on George. He was my 2 x great grandfather. His granddaughter was Henrietta Mcrae (my grandmother). How do you know about the leather mill in London?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards Heather
