I wonder if anyone has any McRies who moved to the north east coast of England. I have traced my 4th gt grandfather on the IGI as Robert McRie born 4th July 1743 Scarborough.According to the parish records his father was James who was "sojourning" there and presumably therefore a visitor but where from? There are McRies in Newcastle so that is a possibility as yet unproved. There are extensive records on the IGI from the The Old Meeting House-Presbyterian Or Independent, Scarborough, Yorkshire, England of Roberts siblings, wife Isabella Watson m 12.05.1777, and children. His son William b 11.05 1778 moved down the coast to Hull and was a "mariner" on the 1841 census, pssibly with the herring boat fleet. His son Thomas, my 2nd gt grandfather was the last of our male line and died 1856.
I cannot connect my McRies to Scotlnd at the moment although family tradition has them "coming from the Isle of Skye"
Versions of the name has been spelt Mackray, Mackreer, M'Crie, McCrie, McRie, Mc Rie, MacKie to name just a few. I have only recently thought of the origins being Macrae which would explain the Skye connection. Please can anyone help me commect James McRie born about 1720 with his Scottish ancestry.
