The historic ferry at Glenelg has been granted a reprieve. The future of the ferry, between Glenelg on the mainland and Kylerhea on Skye, had been in doubt when owner Roddy MacLeod decided to retire, as reported in Glenelg Ferry Sails into the Open Market
in March 2005.
A ferry has operated at Glenelg since Viking times and last year the six car vessel carried 14000 vehicles between Easter and October.
Now villagers hoping for a community buy out have struck a deal to charter the vessel until they can raise the £150,000 asking price. Their bid is being backed by Skye and Lochalsh Enterprise.
