MacRaes with Glenelg connections may be interested to know that the unique Kylerhea ferry is for sale.
Refused all assistance by the Scottish Executive, the ferry has never received any subsidy but has to compete with the infamous Skye Bridge and the loss making but subsidised CalMac ferry from Mallaig to Armadale.
Scottish Transport Minister Nicol Stephen insists that the ferry is not a lifeline service but without it the communities of Glenelg and Kylerhea must surely decline. Now the local community has been given first refusal on the sale of the ferry and the 280 residents will decide whether they want to bid for the vessel.
If they cant raise the cash, the business could be placed on the open market.
