Sheriffmuir Monument repairs
15th June 2010
 |
Those who have visited the Monument may have appreciated the constant struggle that we have had to control the weeds which force their way through the gaps around the paved areas and can give the incorrect impression that it is uncared for. Even in the depth of icy winter the weeds have survived despite our best efforts. The exceptional winter of 2009/2010 has also given us some additional problems. The burn that flows some 50 metres above the Monument burst its banks on several occasions, resulting in a torrent of water flowing through the area. The pointing on the rear walls was washed out and subsidence resulted in a number of the slabs in the paved area collapsing. During May and into June Clan MacRae has had a contractor working on the site. All of the slabs have been lifted and relaid on a solid concrete base. The almost 100 year old pointing on the walls beside the railings and also those beside the Monument itself has been removed and replaced. Various minor repairs to different areas of stonework were also effected. The work attracted much interest in the locality and many people stopped to comment. Most were impressed that Clan MacRae was taking responsibilty for maintaining what is an important landmark in the area. Definitely money well spent! |
