For one day, April 21st 2007, forty-five MacRaes occupied
Hycroft, the famous home of
Alexander Duncan McRae, the Merchant Prince, as his biographer called him. MacRaes assembled from across Canada for their clan AGM and found themselves in every room of this twenty-six room mansion - from the attic to the basement - from the McRae Banquet Room (where a huge painting of A.D. McRae was located) to the servants quarters on the upper level. At this best attended AGM to date, we were intent on catching every point of this interesting chapter of BC McRae history.
First though, there was a dinner in the home of director Anne Brand - a delicious meal of great foods and fellowship, and blessed with a little nectar of the gods! A fiddler entertained us and reminded us with jog and reel, with songs and the fun, that our clan history includes music. We chatted up our history, our MacRae relationships and our many connections across the broad and great country.
On Saturday, some of our group arrived early enough to participate in a superb tour of Hycroft before the AGM began. Led by Executive Director Jo Pleshakov of the University Women's Club (UWC) , we enjoyed being in this magnificently preserved heritage mansion, its many rooms (including ball room), its luxurious amenities, its art, its stained glass windows and its early twentieth century décor. The UWC now owns the mansion and Jo is seen standing on the left of the staircase in the photo. Ruth McRae, a Clan member, and a member of the UWC, sponsored our AGM at Hycroft for which we are grateful .
