Sheriffmuir Commemoration 2010
13th November 2010
Clan MacRae will remember those who gave their lives at the Battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715 by laying a wreath of White Roses at the Monument at midday on Saturday 13th November. Our tragic loss at Sheriffmuir was one of the most significant events in our Clan history and all those interested are invited to join us for this brief ceremony. The nearby Sheriffmuir Inn will be open for lunch or refreshments.

The Buffet Lunch takes place in the Banqueting Hall in the Castle and is open to all MacRaes and their guests. Unfortunately, because of limited space within the Castle places are limited so early booking is recommended once tickets become available in March. A small charge is made for this event.

Pylon Protest, Stirling City Centre
29 Oct 2010
Scottish Rugby Legend Kenny Logan will address a Pylon Protest Meeting at 5.30pm on Friday 29th October in King Street, Stirling. Before Scottish Power can commence work on the Pylons they must present a Mitigation Plan addressing some of the concerns felt by many local people. The Scottish Ministers must approve this Mitigation Plan before work can proceed so it is vitally important that we remind the Government of the great strength of feeling against the Pylons. We cannot now stop the Pylons being erected but we can push for the Stirling and Sheriffmuir section to be undergrounded to the west of the City. If you are in the area please come along to lend support and hear what Kenny and our own Jim McRae have to say.

Sheriffmuir Commemoration 2010
13th November 2010
At noon on Saturday a group of MacRaes will meet at their Clan Monument on Sheriffmuir to remember their kin and others who lost their lives at the Battle of Sheriffmuir on 13th November, 1715. Almost 1000 men from both armies died that day and most of them have lain undisturbed where they fell for almost 300 years.
Today Sheriffmuir is a peaceful place, an oasis of beauty and isolation that has survived almost untouched while only a handful of miles from Stirling and the busy Central belt. Come to Sheriffmuir and you might believe that you are anywhere in the Highlands. But not for much longer! Earlier this year, Scottish Ministers approved a proposal to construct a line of giant pylons right across the moor and through the middle of the Battlefield as a part of the extremely contentious Beauly to Denny Pylon line. Access roads would be gouged across the Historic Site and massive holes dug to form the foundations for the 65 metre high towers which would dominate the landscape. Approval had been granted for the 600 Pylons spread over a 220km route despite objections from over 17,000 individuals, the Cairngorm National Park Authority and every Local Authority between Beauly and Denny. Conscious of the massive Public opposition to the proposal, the Scottish Ministers decreed that the Power Companies must come up with Mitigation Proposals to reduce the visual effect of the Pylons as they came through the sensitive Sheriffmuir and Stirling area, and that work could not commence until the Scottish Ministers approved those Mitigation Proposals. Throughout Europe, and even in scenic Yorkshire, electricity cables are being undergrounded to protect landscapes. A less sensitive route to the west of Stirling has been found to be suitable for undergrounding these cables but the best that the Spanish owned Scottish Power and our own Scottish and Southern Electricity can come up with is to plant some trees and bushes and paint the massive 65 metre high Pylons as they monster their way across Sheriffmuir.
The Beauly to Denny Pylons proposal has been approved despite massive public opinion and will go ahead but what happens to the pylons as they traverse the Stirling area has still to be determined. The Power Companies want to go down the cheapest route and construct their Pylons across Sheriffmuir and onto the brow of the Ochils close by the Wallace Monument but they have stated that, if required to underground the line by the Scottish Ministers, then they will do so.
Let there be no misunderstanding! If the Pylons are allowed to desecrate this beautiful and historic landscape it will be because our Scottish Government has acceded to the wishes of Scottish Power and Scottish and Southern Electricity, the latter having only this week announced a projected profit of £1.3 billion for the year! Their wish is to maximise their profit at minimal cost. Perhaps at minimal cost to them but at an unacceptable cost to the Heritage of Scotland.

It must not be allowed to happen!

MacRae Clan Gathering 2014
1 June 2014
Advance Notice! The next Clan MacRae Gathering will be held in 2014. This is one year earlier than expected but is timed to coincide with the next International Clan Gathering. We believe that this will be held in June 2014 but the actual month has yet to be confirmed. Our Clan Gathering will probably be held on the weekend following.
The year following, 2015, will be the 300th Anniversary of the Batlle of Sheriffmuir and the 100th Anniversary of the erection of the Clan MacRae Monument. If you cannot make it in 2014, join us in 2015!
More details will be provided as soon as they become available.

The Battle of Sheriffmuir, 300th Anniversary
13 Nov 2015
The 13th November 2015 will be the 300th Anniversary of the Battle of Sheriffmuir. It will also be the 100th Anniversary of the unveiling of the Clan MacRae Monument, erected during the dark days of the First World War as a tribute to those who lost their lives on the moor.
Suggestions are invited as to how we should commemorate these two auspicious events.
