At the intersection of five state highways, Routes 23, 280, 319, 341 and 441, you’ll find the Telfair County principle city of McRae, Georgia (Lat: 32°3'52"N, Lon: 82°53'54"W), named after a pioneering Scottish family. It is 258 feet above see level and experiences average temperatures from 9° in January to 27° in July.

Telfair County itself was created in 1807 and named after Governor Edward Telfair, who came to Savannah from Scotland in 1766. The county was primarily populated by Scottish Presbyterians from the Carolinas. McRae was incorporated on the 3rd March 1874 and today has a population of nearly 4000 people, less than 5% of which are from Scottish origins. The local cemetery, however, is well populated with McRae names.

The intersection in the middle of the city forms Liberty Square, a focal point for the area containing twelfth size replica of the Statue of Liberty. Also located here is the refurbished McRae fire bell.

Considering the Scottish origins of the town, the road names in the area are typically American, except maybe Flanders Avenue in the south.

Travel 12 miles from McRae westward and you’ll arrive in Milan, but head out eastward for 6 miles and you’ll find the smaller town of Scotland!
