PLACE: MACRAE, OTAGO, SOUTH ISLAND
The mining town of Macrae can be found off State Highway 85 on the road between Dunback to Hyde, approximately 100kms by road north of Dunedin in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand. Macraes Flat was discovered in the 1980s and is now the largest producing gold mine in New Zealand.

In fact, the entire area is a centre of goldmining, due mainly to the huge open-cast mining of the Macraes Mining Company which began operating in 1990. Mineralisation at Macraes Goldfield extends over an area of up to 35km.

This area is the only home of the Otago Skink, which unlike other lizards, seem to cope easily with the extremes of temperature and weather from snow to temperatures over 25°c. They grow to a length of 130 mm and are coloured black with bold greenish- gold areas. They are found down in gullies where fruiting plants are abundant.

The well known Stanleys Hotel, a popular landmark with its motto "While I live I'll crow" is a focal point of the district.
