PEOPLE: JOHN MCCRAE
John McCrae, with his brother-in-law Gordon Rutherford, arrived in 1848 at Tyntyndyer station, Vitoria, Australia, where they built their first homestead for the Beveridge brothers.

Born in Ireland in 1817, John McCrae sailed for the colonies in 1843 with two sisters. Antoher sister joined them later. Mary Ann McCrae married Gideon Rutherford. After completing the homestead, the brothers-in-law moved into Swan Hill, salvaged from an old punt from the bottom of the Murray River and built the villages first inn from the materials.

McCrae was Swan Hill's first postmaster. He was also a saddler and, for a time, Member of the Legislative Council.

He died on Febrary 19, 1870. McCrae Street in Swan Hill was subsequently named after him.
